***********I meant Burundi vs Kigoma -_-*****************
Hey I will be getting my first fronts for my 125 gal tank! I called my LFS which specializes in african cichlids and he has F1 Kigoma and F1 Burundi available. He sells the Kigoma for $15 each (2") and Burundi for $12 (1"-2"), he gives volume discounts. Kigoma is 3 dollars more, any idea why this is the case? Which would you prefer (eg. temperament, colour, size)? I'm thinking of buying 8-10 of either of these guys and end up with 1M:3F or 2M:4F, or what is a good combo? |

Price difference not a surprise imo, since Kigoma are less common.
Just an opinion, but partly for that reason I'd get Kigoma, everything else being equal... unless the F1 Burundi were actually from certain specific collection points I'd really like to have (like Bulu point, for example). ...Another thing to possibly consider, some people say Kigoma are more shy than Burundi... which was true of the (single) Kigoma I had, but I hesitate to extrapolate a general statement based on a single fish.

You can't go wrong with any variant since all are beautiful fish. If you want to pay a little extra for the Kigoma for bragging rights do it! This way you can say it cost you a little extra for the 7th stripe

You can't go wrong with either, I purchased a group of 13 Kigoma a week before Christmas. They were a little shy to start off with, which was a concern but after about a week in their 125gl home anytime me or one of my family members walk up they all come and say Hi

i personally would get the burundi. i'm not a big fan of the kigomas. i just dont like the cheek marks and they just look a little funny to me. my 14" male that i had was an absolute stunner, and i have never seen any kigoma that ever came close to comparison with him.

I Think sometimes the Burundi is overlooked and under appreciated. A large male Burundi in full breeding mode is a site to behold. I have a colony of W/C (16) and I think they are the text book example of what Frontosa is supposed to look like. I also have a beautiful colony of W/C Moba that are all so outstanding. Well I guess that all the horn blowing i will do on the subject. Burundi-Kigoma-Moba-mpimbwe Ect.....its what makes our world go around, If everybody liked the same, would it not get boring.?

I agree, either way you won't be disappointed. I have kept both, and my vote is for Kigoma.
They are soo beautiful... the pretty yellow in their finnage, their blue faces... cute cheek stripe and "beauty mark" on their foreheads.. and of course, their extra stripe. Alpha males develop humps with age as well. Their behavior is so, for lack of a better description... primative. They are more shy than other Cyphos.. but they swim up to greet me everytime I'm near the tank. In fact, my favorite Cypho of all time had an amazing personality, my old alpha male Kig, his name was "Kigoma", LOL. They spawn like rabbits, my females hold full term, even through tank moves.. and the colony is amazingly gentle. Here are some old pics of some of my WC's. ![]() ![]() ![]() The Kigs tolerate their juvies well, you can see part of Dad in the background for size comparison. ![]() Stripey, my F2 8 striped Kigoma
