Default White or Black sand...

I just want to do a quick poll to see which one is more popular, which one you think is better for Zaire color..what's your opinion...and most important please also describe the type of sand you are using (brand..) Oh I forgot if you could also include a pic that will be great... I am trying to decide what kind of gravel to use for my new tank...I know it will be sand but not sure which type or white/black

I put white sand because I like the look of my tank to be colorful, warm and inviting. I also agree with frontkrazy- I think it looks more natural with white sand.

Nice looking tank BTW frontkrazy!

I think black sand would look better if you were aiming for a dark, deep water feel for your tank.

i like black sand.
for one i collected it from one of only 2 beaches in the US that have it, so it gives me a story to tell.
i also like black because i like a dark tank.
since frontosa are deep water fish, they don't get alot of light.
so in an effort to keep the tank dark i have dark substrate, black background, and low level lighting.
the darker tanks and colors in my opinion sooth them.

i have expressed my feelings ad nauseum about white substrate reflecting too much light and glare into the frontsosa, so i think black calms them down more.
i also think black brings out the color of mpimbwe more.
with my zaire, they look great in both black and white.

again, i do it for calming the fish down, more than what i think looks better, as i think white or brown/tan sand do look more natural.
most of us have white walls in our house.
have you ever gone into somebody's house who had natural brown tones for paint.
they are really soothing.
colors do have a effect on mood.
i like white for saltwater.
i like natural gravel for new world cichlids.
i like black for my frontosa.

Hi Ben,
I voted for white, although Ive never used white, lol. I just set up my tank last week with the Eco-complete African cichlid "Fine grade" which seems to me to be more white than Black. Ive used Black in may tank before and I think the fronts are just to dark in the Black. Now that Ive tried the eco-complete with the white in it, I think it brightened up my Fronts. So My conclusion and personal opinion, I think white sand up against a black background on the tank is perfect for my fronts

I use Carbisea SuperNaturals white sand. I like it, but it is very fine. It easily gets stirred up and I recommend using pre-filters on your HOBs if you use it. It'll cost you some dough too...at $16 - $20 per 20lb. bag.
