Default First spawn for new group

Bought my second Moba group back in September and came home today to find one female with a face full of the beige pearls. I haven't even determined whether I have a male for 100% yet, let alone a pecking order, so this is an unexpected surprise, especially as she is only about 6" max. I didn't witness the spawn so can't know if there was a male involved, time will tell. First time so I will be letting her hold, crossing everything and not be too optimistic. A good start though.

Congrats! 6 inches is plenty big enough for a female to produce fry ime, now it depends on whether you have a mature enough male and how much he knew what he was doing.

Congrats! That is an exciting milestone with a new group. Now that the madness has started for you: my advice is to just let it happen in its own time. Don't fool yourself that you have any control over wether a spawn is successful or not. This has ruined enjoyment of their fish more many Cyphos keepers (myself included).

Another milestone for you: don't get too excited until after five days. If they hold for five days, there may be things you can do to get viable fry. Until they reach that point, I'd just dismiss any spawns.

Until then, just enjoy your magnificent fish

Well I stripped her today. Her mouthful had seriously decreased in size but I could tell she was still holding something as she was refusing food. I wasn't expecting many but I knew they would be wrigglers by now (9 days), and sure enough out came 5 little beauts. Not many, but I am delighted as this is the youngest group I have ever spawned, (female 5-6") and she held first time, which is very encouraging. It is also my third group of Zaires to spawn. I don't even know the ratio for sure in the tank yet and I don't know for certain who the daddy is as I'm not sure if I have one male or two, they are that young. It's always a thrill to get your first spawn off a group.
