Still too small to vent and in a 375 gal tank no real urgency to reduce the group yet imo. But with 27 you have options. For example, you could go ahead and sell a (likely) mixed gender group or two (large group of 10-12 or a couple of smaller groups, etc.). Or you could wait for them to grow more and sell them at a higher price, whether groups, single males, etc. Ime, when growing out groups of juvies you'll have a few small ones-- usually females, a few larger ones-- usually males, and some in between that can go both ways. This becomes more apparent as they get a little more size to them, more in the range where the larger ones are 4+ inches. All of this has been pretty consistent for me.

As far as venting to determine gender, hard to do when they're small, gets easier over 4 inches but people still get fooled, so the larger the better.

Much appreciated! I’ll have to find a local to show me how to vent them when the time comes.

Greenwoodchromis bellcrossi are are doing well so far. I’m getting 4 Gnathochromis Permaxillaris tomorrow and then I’ll get some pictures up of the tank. The fish are all doing well together so far, but they’re all small still. I have a couple friends that are entranced with how cool the community tank is to watch.

On another note, when I was doing a water change yesterday, I noticed that the sand has dark gray areas underneath that don’t vacuum out. Any tips on how to keep my sand bed clean and free of these gray, possibly anoxic zones?

In addition to gravel vacuuming once a month I rake the sand with my fingers to make sure there are no gas pockets or gunk building up. When I do this I smooth out and fill up all the holes that the fish dug, this gives them something to do. Maybe it reduces boredom.
