Default It Begins - Black Congo Calvus

Set up the gear (camera, tripod, & remotely triggered overhead flash) trying to get my new wild calvus from Little Africa Aquatics used to me and my gear. Played around with settings on the camera and a very shy female on lunch break today. Glad she's picking the shell I staged for photography. The big males are very shy still and are hiding out behind rocks. Here are my first attempts with the new group (Altolamprologus calvus, Black Congo Calvus):

Me too

Well, it took food and backing the camera off but I got a couple shots of the males. As they begin to trust me, Lord willing, I should be able to dramatcially improve on these shots (without food too). Well, this just started, so, here they are...

Alpha male

Beta male (foreground) and alpha (background to the left)

This is the same as the first image; however, I wanted to see how it would look cropped in tighter. I was in tight on the original image and I had a very high f-stop (f/29) and a low ISO (100). While not the glamour shot of the alpha male, I wanted to take the training wheels off.

Is that a 40br or a 40l they're housed in? How have they been getting along?

It's 48" long John.

So far, so good. I am breaking my own rule: it's either one male or three plus males and not two. I was planning to put all of them in the 240 but now I am excited to keep them in the 40.

The alpha hangs out on the far right and the beta on the far left. There is a big visual barrier in the middle so line of sight is broken. The alpha doesn't go out of his way to mess with the beta. The beta submits and alpha is ok. The alpha spars with the females more. There is one female that likes his cave and they bicker over it. The three females like to hang out and flirt by the alpha. I did notice once female with a tube yesterday.

I am really enjoying them. Love the alpha, glad I splurged and got a show male. Can't wait to photograph him
