I get purple algae in some of my tanks that have higher spectrum lights from time to time. It takes along time to turn it into purple algae though. Mine just starts with a deep green algae but eventually turns purple if I don't clean it off. (still takes many months)
I wouldn't say it's "common" here in Mn but I have seen it quite a few times. I believe the very high ph, high alkalinity, and very hard water most of our state has is one of the major factors that allows it to grow so well here.

This rock is already starting to turn purple, another couple months and it would be VERY purple with algae if I don't clean it.

Not really...it's a p.i.t.a. to scrub off! hahaha
In my case it's due to a lazy fish keeper who doesn't clean his rocks often enough!

Looks like the purple that reefkeepers try for. Kinda cool looking but I can only imagine how hard it is to clean off!!

Shrimp love it and will clean it completely in a day. No scrubbing at all. Just a different tank.
